JJ McCann Transmission
Forces At Work — forthcoming LP “Hit With Love” preview track
James McCann, an artist with a subtle but profound impact on the music landscape, emerges once more. His forthcoming album, produced by the talented Rob Younger, offers a glimpse into his musical evolution through a fresh single titled "Forces At Work."
This poignant piece, no doubt, is inspired by the late Spencer P Jones and what a tribute to a cherished friend.
Operative under the pseudonym JJ McCann Transmission, an interesting change as McCann has usually renamed his incarnations and not himself. It seems to this writer that JJ McCann is in full command, knowing himself and his process like never before. Just like the mythical figure Merlin, McCann is innately wedded to something beyond our 3 dimensions and so his creations often have a telepathic power as he weaves unique and full colour poetry into the jagged corners of fierce riffs, combining melody with miscreant - howl at the moon moments. So it is that McCann readies himself to unveil "Hit With Love," his full-length creation set to grace Cheersquad Records on September 15. It's a release that invites that kind of contemplation.
McCann's recent work follows his co-production of the acclaimed homage to Spencer P Jones, "All The Way With SPJ," where he united a constellation of revered artists, including Chris Bailey, Kid Congo, Adalita, Violent Femmes, Alejandro Escovedo, Jim Moginie, and The Drones.
With a career spanning three decades in the Australian rock'n'roll arena, McCann possesses an intimate awareness of the challenges within the independent music industry. He honed his craft in Perth's vibrant music community before relocating to Sydney in the early '90s, where he became a part of Nunchukka Superfly, a noteworthy offshoot from the Hard-Ons.
In the grand symphony of the Australian music scene, James McCann's note is too often overlooked. He has left an indelible mark, both as a solo artist and as a collaborator, reflecting a dedication to music that transcends the limelight. McCann's unassuming artistry is a testament to the enduring power of both heartfelt and break down the walls songwriting in our Australian musical lexicon.

Molly McKew
Live at Ringo Bar, Sydney Rd, Brunswick
Molly McKew's live solo show at Ringo Bar on Sydney Road in Brunswick was a delightful discovery in a hidden gem of a venue. Ringo Bar, described as "a box of keepsakes you forgot you owned," truly lives up to its reputation. By day, it's a record store, and by night, it transforms into an intimate setting that can hold no more than 20 people, yet somehow manages to feel as full as a replenished sock drawer.
Entering Ringo Bar was like stepping into a time capsule of forgotten treasures. The walls were adorned with vintage vinyl records, concert posters, and a warm, cozy atmosphere that immediately enveloped you. It was the kind of place where you could easily lose track of time as you explored the nooks and crannies, each corner revealing another piece of music history and a bar that was so close to the music, I'd mistaken it for an old friend after a couple of ales.
Molly McKew took the stage with an unassuming presence, but as soon as she began to strum her guitar and sing, she commanded the room's attention. Her performance of "My Skin Is Thinner" from her 2022 EP, "I Couldn't Grasp It" was my introduction to her world, and it left a lasting impression. The song was a testament to her offbeat lyrical prowess, delivering introspective and thought-provoking lyrics with a gentle yet deliberate melody.
Molly's voice had a haunting quality that carried the emotional weight of the song's lyrics, and her guitar playing added a folk rhythm that felt like a spiritual journey with a Viking's soul. It was a captivating blend of genres that showcased her versatility as an artist.
Seemingly untamed, her voice provided a dynamic range that captivated and engaged the audience throughout the show. It was a remarkable display of vocal control and emotion, adding depth and authenticity to her performance.
The intimate setting of Ringo Bar allowed for a deep connection between the artist and the audience. Molly engaged with her listeners, sharing stories and anecdotes that added a personal touch to the performance. It felt like she was inviting us into her world, allowing us to glimpse the emotions and experiences that had inspired her music.
All in all, this was a hidden gem in a box of forgotten keepsakes. It was a night of memorable music in a venue that felt like a cozy, time-traveling oasis. I look forward to seeing Molly McKew again and exploring more of the musical treasures that Ringo Bar has to offer.
